Under the framework of the “#OurVoteCountsNG” Project, which aims to increase the participation of women, youth and other marginalized groups in the electoral process in Nigeria, the Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF), with support from the European Union Support to Democratic Governance (EU-SDGN), conducted Voter Education activities throughout Local Governments Areas (LGAs) in Imo State.
With the objective of reaching out to a wider public, fifteen sensitization sessions were conducted for women and young women from 7 to 9 December 2018 in LGAs under the three Senatorial Districts of the State. These LGAs are Orlu, Nkwerre, Isu, Nwangele, Orsu, Owerri Municipal, Ezinihitte Mbaise, Aboh Mbaise, Owerri East, Owerri West, Okigwe, Isi Ala Mbaro, Onuimo, Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta LGAs.
In the end, over 750 women and young women were reached, and their knowledge enhanced on issues around women’s active participation in the electoral process and preparations towards the 2019 General Elections. These targeted efforts are expected to help increase the number of women voters in the 2019 General Elections and beyond.
