Recognizing that the quality mentoring relationships have powerful positive effects on young people in a variety of personal, academic, and professional situations, the Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF) has initiated a mentorship process between young women and women in politics in Edo and Kano states under the Creating Spaces project supported by the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF).

With both states currently devoid of female legislators in their state assemblies, the ongoing mentorship process aims at growing up a critical mass of young women with a willingness to reflect on and share experiences in politics, especially as the need resurfaces after the 2019 General Elections to support existing strategies towards closing the gender gaps in the state parliaments.

Though collated experiences from young women are different according to situated political terrain, they detail how mentoring could have a profound impact. This process is expected to further connect selected young women to networks of support and technical resources that allow them to reach for opportunities and succeed in their political pursuit.
