Competition is important to engender innovation and increase knowledge. Gender issues, particularly, women’s leadership and political participation are not taught in schools, creating a knowledge gap in amongst women – especially young women.
The Nigerian Women Trust Fund, with the support of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) under the auspices of the Young Women Leaders Project organized a series of essays and debates to generate discourse on gender issues and inspire young women to aspire to leadership positions. The essay competition ran on virtual platforms in May while the debates are scheduled to hold at the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri on the topic: ‘A Woman’s Place, To Lead or To Be Led?’ on June 7 and June 9, 2017 respectively.
The young women are expected to do some research on the topic, air their personal views and in the process, broaden their knowledge of the issues which will ultimately fuel their passion for leadership.
