The Nigerian Women Trust Fund is taking its advocacy further by partnering with young women platforms to promote women’s leadership and political participation. One of such is the recent partnership with the National Assembly Corps Members Forum consisting of NYSC Corps members serving in the National Assembly.

The young woman organized an interactive session with female lawmakers in the National Assembly. The meeting tagged ‘Women in Politics: The Way Forward’was aimed at finding ways to empower and encourage more Nigerian women especially young women to run for office. This is expected to translate to increased representation of women in parliament and other decision-making positions.

Due to a national event in Lagos which the female lawmakers were attending, they sent representatives to participate in the meeting. Other corps members in the National Assembly also attended the programme. Key issues such as the need for reorientation, mentorship, courage, strategic organization and mobilization of young women, camaraderie between sisters, capacity building, early preparation and participation in the electoral process were highlighted. The meeting also discussed ways to improve female representation in governance and leadership and gathered commitment from the young women to spread the message and take political participation seriously.
