The Nigerian Women Trust Fund held a Press Conference on 28th July, 2016. The aim of the Press Conference was to present the young women leaders to the press and present prizes to the winners of the essay competition. The press conference was attended by representatives of the young women leaders from Bida in Niger State and Keffi in Nasarawa state and members of the press – TVC, Radio Nigeria, Nigeria Info FM, Leadership Newspaper, Guardian Newspaper and Blueprint Newspaper.
During the Conference, NWTF informed the Press that they have embarked on an ambitious goal of grooming at least 1000 extra-ordinary young women leaders by 2018. To achieve this, NWTF is implementing different projects including the NED supported Young Women Leadership project in Niger, Nasarawa, Abia and Kogi State. These Young Women Leaders have been instilled impeccable leadership propensity to take up leadership spaces and cause unprecedented transformation in their communities.
The Young Women Leadership project include trainings on leadership skills, communication, public speaking, organizing skills, community mobilization for legislator-constituency engagements, online engagements, learning visits to the parliament and other strategic participation in leadership programmes and events. The young women leaders have had meetings with communities and have led communities to present requests on development issues to elected officials representing their constituency. This is the first time a group of Nigerian young women are leading communities in legislator engagement.
To further advance women’s political participation we have also launched the #MyBoldSteps campaign with our young women leading the movement. #MyBoldSteps aims at galvanizing more action by men in creating enabling environment for women’s leadership and political participation and spurring young women and women to take bolder steps in leadership and political participation.
We believe that with the right crop of young women, increased women’s representation in government is assured.
