Woman Leaders of political parties were present at the three-day capacity building organised by the Nigerian Women Trust Fund with support from the African Regional Democracy Fund (ARDF) through the US embassy in Nigeria which was held between 12 and 14 August 2020 in Abuja.  They analyzed the recent adoption by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as good women for women’s political participation. According to the Woman Leaders present, this is a good development and a demonstration of the fact that balanced and improved representation of women in political parties and at all levels of governance in Nigeria is possible.

At its 88th NEC meeting session held on 27th January, 2020 PDP resolved as follows:

  1. Out of the 17 Ward Excos, 6 shall be women
  2. 6 out of the 18 Local Government Excos shall be women.
  3. There shall be 13 women out of the 39 State Excos of the party.
  4. There shall be 4 women out of the 12 Zonal Excos of the party.
  5. There shall be 19 National Working Committee, NWC Members and 6 MUST be women.

According to the party, the above shall become and form part of the 2020 Guidelines for all Congresses and National Convention and must be strictly adhered to pursuant to Section 6 (7) of 2017 PDP Constitution, which provides that “In nomination for party offices, not less than 35 percent shall be reserved for women”

The Woman Leaders are looking forward to the actual implementation of this provision as well as emulation by all the political parties in Nigeria. According to the Woman Leaders, if this development is adopted and implemented by all political parties in Nigeria, there will be an improvement in political participation and representation of women especially as the 2023 draws near.
